When Will There Be Another Great Returner?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

In the history of tennis, no one could return the ball as well as Andre Agassi. Agassi played from 1986-2006, and since turning in his racquet no one has been able to take his place as reigning Return of Serve King.

An aggressive returner seeks out the weak points of a player and then hammers each ball at those vulnerabilities. Attacking the serve does not mean you hit the ball as hard and fast as you can, it means you gauge your opponent’s weak points and hit to them, whether that be straight up the baseline, a shot with vicious topspin, or simply running your opponent ragged. Agassi was so good because he could identify the low points in his opponent’s game quickly.

The returner gaining control over the server is a rarity in tennis. A solid return will place control of the game solely in the hands of the returner. Playing the return of serve gives you both the physical and mental upper hand. Getting in the mind of your opponent is half the battle; even if he’s the better player, your opponent will falter if he doubts his ability.

To be a successful returner you must practice. Returning to strong servers, serve and volley players, and lefties are all different. Only practice makes perfect.

In some ways, all players are better returners today than in years past. New, higher-end technical racquets allow players the ability to return previously impossible shots with increased accuracy than with older wooden racquet models. Yet even with these advances, no players have reached the level of Mr. Agassi.

This is a particularly successful tactic for players with weak serves.

Prince Badminton Rackets

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Prince badminton rackets have been around for quite a while now, offering slightly quirky designs along the way. The early racquets had the x-axis design that looked something like a diamond head shape. The latest models are the 03 rackets, and have proved to be very popular.

Prince are more well known for their tennis and squash rackets, as they are one of the biggest manufacturers in the world, sponsoring many of the world’s top players. They have a good reputation for producing quality products in these fields, but have struggled to gain a foothold in the badminton market.

I have used the older Prince models with the x-axis design, and they were prone to string breakage due to the string bed design, which caused the strings to be spaced out more than conventional designs. Another problem with this extra string spacing was a lack of control when the shuttle hit the strings.

Prince still use this head shape in some of their lower priced rackets, but the more expensive rackets now use an isometric head shape, or as Prince call it, the quadraform head shape. The benefit of the quadraform shape is that it creates an enlargened sweet spot, helping you to hit more consistent shots, more of the time.

The new 03 range has a new technology which is different from any other manufacturer. Prince have created open ports at the 12, 3, and 9 o’clock positions on the racket head. This basically means they have made the grommet holes much larger at these points. The effect is to improve the speed and aerodynamics of the racket.

There are two choices in the 03 range, the 03 Red, and the 03 Silver. The Red has a flexible rating, and is designed for more power. The 03 Silver has a slightly stiffer rating, and is designed for more control.

This new technology appears to be in total contrast to the Prince M+ badminton rackets, which focused on creating tiny grommet holes to give extra control. This u-turn from Prince is pretty drastic to say the least. Perhaps they have seen the error in their ways.

The new 03 range has proved to be a hit amongst badminton players, with many retailers out of stock, however the prices do vary quite a lot, so it would be wise to shop around for the best deal.

Prince are putting more of their resources into badminton these days, and hopefully more new badminton rackets will be available soon, offering something a little bit different to the others.

Cooperative Games for Children

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Janet and I decided play a little tennis recently to get a cardio workout. The last time we played was almost 30 years ago when we first met, so we knew the fundamentals but were, to say the least, a bit rusty! At 56 and 66 respectively, Janet and I aren’t exactly Serena Williams and Roger Federer!

So we went to our local Wal-Mart, bought a couple of inexpensive racquets, some balls and a tennis bag, and off we went to the community tennis court to test our mettle. We began by volleying back and forth awhile, we still could hit the ball pretty good, and then we began to play a game. But we just couldn’t get ourselves to play the regular way. Whenever we hit a smash that the other person couldn’t return, we felt bad instead of triumphant. Trying to make the other person miss the ball seemed completely foreign to us now, not like when we were younger, so we ended up counting points against each other when we didn’t hit the ball so that the other person had a chance to return it! This doesn’t mean that we hit the ball easy; we hit it hard and fast, but we tried to put it where the other person had a chance to hit it back.

Well; this complicated the scoring no end, so we decided not to keep score at all and only keep the ball volleying back and forth as many times as we could. It was a cooperative thing rather than a competitive thing, and we found interesting contrasts coming up regarding the feelings we had those many years ago when we competed vigorously, compared to what we were feeling now. Trying to hit the ball so that the other can return it has a completely different feel about it rather than trying to make the other person miss.

When the “game” was over, we were smiling broadly and felt closer than ever, because for an hour or so, we were helping each other again, which we have become used to doing for many years. There were no feelings of victory or defeat, competitiveness, superiority or inferiority, just a warm feeling of cooperation.

This feeling of cooperation intrigued me, to the point of checking cooperative games out on the internet, (Learning for life, and Cooperative games (dot) com), and I learned that “Cooperative games emphasize participation, challenge, and fun rather than defeating someone. Cooperative games emphasize play rather than competition. Cooperative games are not new.” “Teamwork, fair play and nature is (the) theme. These are educational games for children of all ages, the entire family or school… outdoor playthings… also emphasize cooperation instead of competition and are fun for large gatherings.” “We feel that playing a game cooperatively brings out the best in every player. Our games contain one simple concept – all players’ work together to attain a mutually desirable goal. Strategies, resources and decisions are shared. The challenge and enjoyment is in the teamwork. Think of the important message this is giving to children.” Cooperative games are a variation on the more familiar competitive games. These games encourage teamwork, creative thinking, problem solving, and helps players realize that everyone can win.

They are full of surprises and challenges, but most of all; they are fun! The basic ‘rules’ are: Everyone plays i.e. no one is excluded, and the games are structured so that everyone can join in. No one gets hurt. Everyone has fun, and everyone wins. If a game (makes) it difficult or impossible for players to meet those criteria then it needs to be modified.”

I also discovered that there are wonderful children’s board games that are cooperative, and I wouldn’t be surprised if there weren’t video games as well. Just a thought during this Christmas gift-giving season.

Tennis Racquets – What Are Your Options?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

For someone just getting started as a tennis player, all racquets look pretty similar. For that reason it might seem as though it makes no difference which brand, size, or style you choose, as they all do basically the same thing. However, while it’s true that all tennis racquets have the same basic function, there can be a massive difference in the way these racquets perform.

In short, all racquets are not created equal. Because of the similar appearance of most racquets, the tendency to just find the cheapest one and go with it is understandable. At the same time, racquets are the most important piece of equipment in tennis, and to progress as a player you will definitely want to choose a style and brand that reflects your abilities and tendencies.

Some racquets are designed primarily to give the player more power, whereas other designs emphasize control. Some racquets try to blend the two together. Which style is best for you will depend on your skills as a tennis player, and where your game needs improvement. If you need to add power to your serve or return, it is best to choose from the racquets that weigh between eight and ten ounces and have a wider oversize head. Bigger heads will give your swing more power and put more spin at the ball, though it comes at the cost of tighter control.

Beginning players might prefer these power racquets simply because they make it easier to hit the ball, and to deliver more power with less effort.

Once you start to get the hang of tennis and your skills develop, you might want to explore different racquets. Many players with moderate, developing abilities prefer racquets that weigh a little bit more, with a slightly smaller head. This way they can begin to improve their accuracy and control while not giving up too much power.

Finally, advanced players looking for the most precise control tend to prefer racquets that weigh over 10.5 ounces with an even smaller head. Again, these racquets are favored primarily by players with more skill and experience, and desire for more precise control. Advanced players benefit from having a developed sense of their style and abilities, which makes choosing a racquet specific to their abilities an easier task.

Another factor to consider is whether you want to play with the traditional racquet length or with an extra long design. Just as wider head surfaces provide more power, so do extra long frames; however, this comes at the expense of some maneuverability. Similarly, head-heavy racquets offer more power, but less control at the net, while head-light racquets do the opposite.

Of course, your budget needs to be considered as well. You can in fact play with a used racquet from a thrift store; however, this will probably not be the optimal racquet for enhancing your game, and some new racquets can be surprisingly affordable. One of the biggest cost indicators in new racquets is whether the model is of a pre-strung or an optimal “performance” frame. The former racquets tend to sell from anywhere between $25 to $60 each, whereas the latter run between $100 and $300 dollars.

Premium performance frames feature the most developed racquet technology, and also allow customization as far as string and tension. Pre-strung models offer a more standard, less tailored performance, and can be a great option or beginners still finding their style.

Choosing between all of the available racquets and finding the best one for you can make the difference between having a mediocre tennis game and a successful one. Exploring tennis racquets until you find your best fit won’t make you a pro overnight, but it can elevate your game as you choose from racquets that best meet your size, skill level and style.
